The Problem

The Impact and Consequences of a Cooling Failure

A cooling failure often starts unnoticed — and without early detection, can quickly escalate into a catastrophe.

Stage 1 — Early Detection
Cooling Failure

The cooling fails. As a consequence, the magnet may begin losing helium. No critical damage yet, but immediate action is required.

→ Refill helium if needed, minimal downtime
Stage 2 — Critical
Quench

Usually the consequence of a prolonged cooling failure. A quench occurs: the magnet abruptly collapses its magnetic field. A significant amount of helium is lost. In 3-Tesla systems, all helium is lost — regardless of the previous fill level.

→ Helium costs from €10,000, plus downtime of at least 1.5 days
Stage 3 — Thermocycle
Magnet Warms Up

The quench goes unnoticed. Without helium, the magnet warms up — within as little as 2 hours, the critical temperature can be exceeded. At this point, normal cool-down with liquid helium is no longer possible. A so-called thermocycle becomes necessary: a highly complex process in which the magnet is slowly cooled down again over several weeks. The system is out of service for weeks.

→ Costs from €300,000, downtime of several weeks
The decisive difference between Stage 1 and Stage 3?
Early detection — and the right response at the right moment.

Real case — Munich, June 2026

Weekend. The rooftop AC unit fails. By chance, a cleaning employee notices the acoustic alarm on Saturday and contacts the radiologist — still, the quench could not be prevented.

Repair costs: €88,000 — plus days of downtime.

Without the quick response of the cleaning employee, the quench would have gone unnoticed and led to the magnet warming up — thermocycle.

How it works

Simple. Secure. Reliable.

🔌
Connection to the MRI alarm contact

Mag-Guard connects directly to the dedicated remote alarm contact of the Siemens MRI — a potential-free relay contact provided exclusively by Siemens for external alarm use. No interference with the MRI electronics.

📡
Continuous Monitoring

The Mag-Guard device continuously reads the MRI alarm contact and regularly transmits the status to our servers — fully automatically, around the clock.

🚨
Instant Alerting

As soon as the MRI reports an alarm — or the device stops reporting — you are immediately notified by SMS and email. Even in the event of a power outage.

🔌
Just power and network — nothing more

All that is required on the customer's side is a standard power outlet (230V) and a network connection. Mag-Guard is installed by us — no technical knowledge required, no effort on your part.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Mag-Guard?

Mag-Guard is a 24/7 monitoring system for Siemens MRI machines. It continuously monitors the MRI alarm contact and sends an immediate alert by SMS and email the moment a cooling failure is detected — automatically, around the clock, including nights and weekends. The goal is to detect problems at Stage 1, before they escalate into a costly quench or thermocycle.

Where is Mag-Guard connected?

Mag-Guard connects directly to the potential-free alarm contact of the Siemens MRI — a dedicated interface provided by Siemens specifically for external alarm use. There is no interference with the MRI electronics whatsoever. The only additional requirements are a standard power outlet (230V) and a network connection.
